Beyond survival: understanding the patient experience
When we talk about clinical trials, we often focus on hard outcomes such as cancer recurrence or overall survival. But there is another essential dimension: how patients experience their treatment.
In LIVERATION, we believe that improving liver cancer care means not only reducing recurrence, but also understanding how surgery impacts patients’ daily lives, wellbeing and recovery.
That is why the trial collects what are known as:
-
Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) – how patients feel and function after treatment.
-
Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) – how patients perceive the care they receive.
These questionnaires allow participants to share their perspective directly — in their own words and at different timepoints throughout the study.
From paper to digital: making participation easier
Until now, patients have completed these questionnaires on paper during hospital visits. While this works well for many, others may prefer a more flexible option.
To respond to these preferences, the LIVERATION consortium has developed a secure digital platform that allows patients to complete the questionnaires online — at their own pace, from their computer or mobile phone.
This new system aims to:
-
Increase convenience for participants
-
Reduce administrative burden
-
Minimise data entry errors
-
Improve efficiency in data collection
A new milestone for LIVERATION
After extensive development and testing, we are pleased to announce that the digital version of the LIVERATION PREM and PROM questionnaires has reached the “site team training” phase.
It will soon be available to participants across the study centres.
By combining surgical innovation with digital solutions and patient-centred research, LIVERATION continues to advance a more holistic approach to liver cancer care.
Because understanding outcomes also means understanding experiences.
