The digital transformation of the health sector is advancing rapidly across Europe, yet a key challenge remains: fragmentation. Technological innovation, regulation and the real needs of patients often progress in parallel rather than together. To address this, the “Building Bridges in Digital Health Innovation: Data, Policy, People” webinar was held last November, organised with the support of SHINE 2Europe.

The event brought together experts, researchers and policymakers to discuss how to build bridges that move innovation from research to real-world implementation—an approach fully aligned with the values we promote within LIVERATION: responsible innovation, European collaboration, and solutions centred on people.

BEYOND TECHNOLOGY: THREE ESSENTIAL PILLARS

Throughout the webinar, speakers emphasised that technology alone is not enough. To create a sustainable, equitable digital health ecosystem, three fundamental pillars must be aligned:

  1. Interoperability and data quality
Participants highlighted the need to break down barriers to accessing high-quality health data. FAIR data and interoperability across systems and countries are essential to drive advanced research and accelerate medical innovation in the EU. Enabling secure and ethical access to health data will be crucial for the next generation of European projects.

  2. Evidence-based policymaking
Digital innovation can only scale when public policies evolve alongside it. Speakers stressed the importance of harmonised regulatory frameworks, cross-border cooperation and decisions grounded in robust scientific evidence. This alignment will ensure that digital solutions reach patients safely and efficiently.

  3. People at the centre
The strongest message of the event was clear: digital health must be built WITH and FOR people. Integrating Social Sciences and Humanities, together with co-creation processes involving patients and citizens, ensures that digital tools are socially acceptable, ethical, usable and truly transformative. This perspective strongly echoes the spirit of projects like LIVERATION, where patient experience plays a central role.
